"Da Vibe" -> 2011 ->

The truly talented should not, um, "sell themselves short."

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Note: Aubrey M. Horton has doctored scripts for five screenwriters who've won national competitions. In 1999, a screenwriter (who has had several scripts doctored by Horton) wrote a project which won a Golden Globe nomination.
In "Creative Screenwriting" magazine -- Jim Shea rated Horton as a "highly recommended" script doctor, i.e., in the top 8 nationally.
Zap-Gram -> 9-8-08 ->
1) Earlier this summer, one of our talented alums wrote us that the screenplay, which she’d developed in our workshop: “. . . made it to the finals in ‘The Broad Humor Screenplay Contest.’ It is solely for humor scripts written by women." (A room near the beach.)
2) In June – a Texas camera rolled on a doctored writer’s horror screenplay. Interesting crew. (Wildcat on.)
3) Also in June – one of our most prolific alums had yet another feature script go to camera at the Ranch Studios near Austin. Did we mention that this vice president of development was highly prolific? Word is, she may roll camera on another of her scripts before the end of the year. (In the know.)
4) More from Austin. This summer -- a workshop participant also rolled camera on an indie HD feature, which he’d written and was producing. (Musicology.)
5) Never too busy. Yes, she may be a writer, director, and a producer . . . but she’s also a talented actress, too. This award-winning alum was recently featured in a J.C. Penny commercial. Whoa. Impressive. Plus, in August she was invited to attend “the Nickelodeon Writer’s Workshop at the 12th annual American Black Film Festival” in Hollywood. (So relaxed on camera.)
6) And since we’re on the topic of successful careers, our wonderfully talented phenom recently informed us that he: “. . . just got another gig . . . a rewrite of [a] remake . . . for Nicole Kidman’s company Blossom Films, set up over at Fox. So I’m excited about that.” (A no-bluff poker hand.)
7) And since we’re on the topic of savvy Texas hold ‘em players, one of our favorite workshop alums of all time . . . e-mailed us that: “My good news is I just got my congratulatory quarterfinalist letter from the Nicholl Screenplay Fellowship competition. It was read and selected by three judges from 5,234 entries, 241 of which are quarterfinalists.” Yes, indeed. That’s no easy feat. And, of course, this award-winning wordsmith is truly deserving of such recognition vis-à-vis having made the Nicholl cut before. (Robert Altman.)
8) But wait. There’s more good news from yet another workshop alum who recently e-mailed us that: “. . . the script that I wrote in '05 in your class will go into production sometime this year. I have five weeks to rewrite it. I have a producer who graduated film school from University of Central Florida wanting it to be his first feature film produced. [. . .] Thanks for all your help!” (Oh, man. Such a natural.)
9) And since we’re on the subject of e-mails from happy campers, one of our alums who first studied with us and then nabbed a hefty scholarship to UT film school wrote us that: “I moved out to L.A. in late May and completed an internship with "Battlestar Galactica" and The Collective, who's now interested in some of my scripts. I was also nominated for a Humanitas Student Fellowship Award by UT for a television spec (keep your fingers crossed).
"I got some news today about a feature I've been working on with a director [. . . .] We have some agents interested in repping us [. . . .] We also have a casting director [. . .] interested in working with us. As for talent, Brea Grant is interested in a role. Brea will be a principle character on the new season of HEROES.
"[. . .]
"I just wanted to drop you a line, since it was your workshop that started all this silliness." (Talk about a fun career in the biz.)
10) And there was yet another bit of good news . . . from a workshop-alum sweetheart -- who’s also a wonderful filmmaker -- writing us that: “. . . I was invited to attend the Nickelodeon Writer's Lab at the Palm Springs Film Fest. Only 5 people [were] invited [. . .] a big deal. [. . .] Thanks again for being such a great teacher." (Always a pleasure.)
11) And lastly, one final item. A two-time workshopper from a number of years ago (who went on to win numerous writing awards) . . . well, this summer this talented scribe won 2nd place in the Hook contest. (Mr. Responsibility.)
That’s a hurricane wrap. Storm on.
